Balenciaga – My Opinion

Balenciaga is a brand I know a lot of my followers on Draw A Dot love. However, when I was asking what Haute Couture brands I should consider as the next open call topic, someone said “just not Balenciaga please”. After that, I have a number of conversations with my followers. Since a lot of people still want to know how I feel about this brand, I am going to let you know here.

Balenciaga

Before that, I have to give you some information on why I love fashion.

Fashion is a fantasy where designers create outfits and invite us to their worlds. The outfits we see on most runways are well crafted. These pieces are usually for magazine editorials to promote the brands. Alexander McQueen, Junya Watanabe, Viktor and Rolf, Versace, and Miuccia Prada are the designers I love. Even though I cannot own their runway pieces, they give me a clear indication of what brands fit my aesthetic. In this case, I purchase their more commercial-friendly pieces (still with the runway collection elements and that’s the key) and add them to my wardrobe. In my opinion, clothing is my armor and I need to find the right brand to bring out my personality. If you know me in person, you probably have seen my tie collection. All of them are collectible pieces.

If Demna Gvasalia‘s Balenciaga were introduced in the 90s, I would 100% refuse to work in this industry. Without a doubt, the brand has great marketing strategies. As we know, if you are connected to Kanye West or Kim Kardashian, your brand will for sure be a hit. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy the sock boots and the hourglass bags. However, many of the products the brand is producing right now can be found in Walmart. If fashion is fantasy, why will we be seeing baggy jeans, Hot Topic t-shirts, and oversized hoodies on the runway? What’s the difference between fast fashion brands and this high fashion brand? Are people buying them just so they can show off they are rich?

The most fascinating part is this. We all know Demna is very open about his refugee background. So in a weird sense, is he making fun of poor people by producing what you can get in Walmart but with a 4 digit price tag? If you are a supporter and buy his clothes, are you casting a silent vote on this idea?

If you want to talk about the construction part, let’s talk about Haute Couture.

As we all know, Haute Couture is the highest tier of fashion. Based on the live stream and the photos of the F/W 2022 show, why did many of the people walking in the show look unflattering? I love Nicole Kidman, but she looked like she was wrapped in tin foil and came out from a microwave. How is this show supposed to attract Haute Couture clients to purchase custom-made Balenciaga pieces? Where is the fantasy part when Demna sent down a few models wearing body suits and baggy denim pieces?

I am not against people liking Demna Gvasalia‘s Balenciaga. However, if you think this brand is the future of fashion, I have 4 questions I like to ask.

  1. What got you into high fashion?
  2. What does fashion mean to you?
  3. Are you buying this brand because of the hype?
  4. If you believe this is the best brand right now, then what are you expecting to see from other designers in the future?

I hope I can hear more stories about this Balenciaga era and perhaps that will change my mind. Perhaps someone working at the atelier can tell me more about it. But for now, this is just not a brand I can fully support.

Feel free to leave a comment and let me know how you feel about this brand.

P.S. I will still feature your Balenciaga artworks, as long as they are good.
